Visit at Chris Lukhaup place - February 2005 (site 3/7)
Meanwhile Chris disappeared somewhere, but we knew that we will find him next to crayfishes, so we continued to look at other shrimp tanks.
In the warehouse there were really fantastic and interesting species of fish, crustaceans and reptiles. About 500 adult Macrobrachium looked pretty enough to spend some time looking at them and their green saddles. Probably it was Macrobrachium idella .
On our way we were passing stack with reptiles and amphibians. - Look into my eyes sweetheart - I said to lizard and she did:) She had very thoughtful eyes. Maybe she had depression :) - Probably she thinks a lot and writes poems in the evening, poor thing - I thought and went to get to Chris and Jackie. On my way I also passed salamander, which suffer from catatonics, or maybe she just posed for pictures for me ;) One way or another I made photos.
We passed by another stack with tanks.
- Oh there's Chris, with crayfishes - Jackie noticed
- Is there any Cherax destructor here?? - She asked
- We can check, they should be - he answered and give us sign to go after him. We went into glass, not heated premises (it warm inside anyway)
"I was a little bit dazed with all this; I don't remember seeing so many rare things even in zoo. And I was about to see my dream animal life - crayfish with adorable name Cherax destructor. On photos it looked amazing, with large heart beating I was coming to tank, full of anxiety if it won't spoil my dreams.
In fact, first look into tank was a little disappointment. Creature was nice but to call him "destructor"? ;) Chris asked smartly (like if he knew what was going to happen) if I know how to catch crayfish. I told him honestly that I don't - so far the only crayfish I had a chance to hold was rather small and peaceful Procambarus fallax. But I had terrible desire to hold this destructor... :) and Chris saw it.
Straight ahead he pulled out of tank over 20 cm big bastard :), which started to move legs and powerful tongs, shaking his abdomen like crazy. I started to doubt if it's a good way to start friendship with this monster, but there was no way out. Chris showed me exactly how and where to catch it, with sweated from nerves fingers I decided to do it.
What can I say - destructor was smarter than me. I regret only that on photo you can't see my face - terror mixed with pain had to look pretty funny, because Chris was laughing. I wasn't laughing; it's hard to have sense of humor when you have finger in living vice. My instinct told me not to take it out but to press destructors tongs in wrists, afraid of loosing his weapon he left my finger alone. IT was saved, and I was all sweated and dry mouth.
I looked into beast eyes, it wasn't scared at all, he was mad - I felt tenderness and respect and ... I fell in love with turquoise-orange mister Cherax destructor :) "
