Visit at Chris Lukhaup place - February 2005 (site 1/7)
Systematic of shrimps was for me and Jackie a big mystery. Although we looked through all available publications, still we weren't which we should take for granted. Only solutions seemed to be to talk to someone, who is interested in freshwater crustaceans longer than us. We decided that Chris Lukhaup will be the best person, he's a man who is "very deep" in this subject, and he always is ready to talk. Although his specialization is crayfishes, he is well oriented in shrimps.
And so after a month of preparing questions and photos to identification, on 2nd of February we went to the south of Germany. After 17 hours of driving, at 2:30 am we reached a small town near Stuttgart. Chris picked us up from road, so we wouldn't get lost. Just after couple of minutes we started to talk about shrimps :) and Chris promised that the next morning his going to take us to his friends warehouse. First - we would have to buy fish and crustacean's species which are unavailable in Poland, second - warehouse imported new specie of crayfish that Chris didn't know yet. Although he hadn't seen it live, he described that it has violet pigmentation and beautiful tongs.
After reaching quest house we put our bags inside and went straight to bed. We slept until 10 am, than Chris woke us up. After coming out of house we saw a beautiful garden. Weather was like if we ordered it - beginning of February and about +12 C. On our way to breakfast we manage to meet "aggressive pigeon", pupil of landlady, saved by her after he was hit by car. "Aggressive pigeon" is said not to like quests, but he spared us and didn't blinded us :))
After breakfast we sat in Chris car and went to warehouse.
Quite big, white, one floor building was placed in a small city.
Owner is a good friend of Chris, they cooperate for years. We went straight ahead to room with tanks.
It's hard to say how many is in there but on 2000 square meters you can put pretty many tanks:) Walking along with Chris, who was just passing buy tanks with fish, we didn't have any doubts that we're going to get to tanks with shrimps. We didn't mistake too much - we got to crayfish. Chris didn't overdo in his tales. Cherax sp. Nigli - was really something. I saw a sparkle in Jackie eye - Really pretty - I said with admiration. They looked pretty funny, hidden in hideouts made from cut pipes and bricks.
